Two of those Mexican Heavyweights are in action this Wednesday as the unbeaten Cesar Escareno (1-0, 1) takes on the win-less Rogelio Morales (0-3). Hard to say much about this but we Escareno to be the bigger man, having weighed in at 280lbs for his debut whilst Morales was 224lbs for his most recent bout. Although win-less Morales does have the better quality on his record and he may well be able to spring the unexpected victory here.
Going back just a few years and the Mexican Heavyweight scene didn't exist. All of a sudden however we've seen a number of Mexican Heavyweights in action, crawling around in the shadow of Andy Ruiz Jr.

This week has been a disappointing one for the Heavyweight division. Unfortunately Saturday, usually the highlight of the boxing weekend, doesn't give us anything in terms of bouts to talk about. In fact it's relative lack of action makes it easily the most disappointing day of the week.
Two of the three Heavyweight bouts we know about for the day take place in Russia. The most interesting of the men involved in those bouts is Apti Davtaev (4-0, 4) who sports an outstanding record as a professional. Unfortunately it's hard to say much about Davtaev due to his very low level of opponent. That doesn't change here as Davtaev fights the winless against Oleksandr Pritula (0-2). in what should be a clear opportunity to move Davtaev's record to 5-0 (5). The other Russian bout looks much more even as Arbi Madaev (2-0) takes on Ivan Shvayko (2-1, 1). Shvayko, from the Ukraine, has mixed in better company suffering his sole loss to Vyacheslav Glazkov wilst scoring wins over fighters who were 4-0 and 5-0 when he faced them. Unfortunately for Shvayko he hasn't been active recently and hasn't fought since 2010. Interesting Madaev has already fought Pritula, dropping him 3 times in the contest. The only thing we get from this card is a chance to compare Madaev to Davtaev in regards to how they each cope with Pritula. The only other Heavywight contest is in Brazil as the stop-or-be-stopped Leonardo De Moura (5-9, 5) takes on a yet to be named opponent for the interim Brazilian Heavyweight title (FNBPB version). Moura, with 14 fights to his name, has lost his last 3 and never gone beyond the second round. Even more astonishingly is the fact he has lost in domestic title fights are both Light Heavyweight and Cruiserweight. We have no idea who will be in the opposite corner but we'll happily bet this one doesn't go the distance! Usually we expect plenty of Heavyweight action on a Fridaym even if it's not top quality stuff we do expect plenty of fights. Unfortunately this week we only see a handful of lesser bouts.
Thankfully one of the lesser bouts does include an unbeaten man as Nick Cyr (2-0, 2) is in action. Unfortunately Cyr won't be fighting anything close to a test as he battles the win-less Alando Pugh (0-2) who has been stopped in both of his bouts so far. The only other other bout seems set to feature US based Jamaican Lenroy Thomas (16-3, 8). Sadly Thomas doesn't currently have an opponent listed though with all the low level Heavies in the US we'd be shocked if the shows promoter can't find someone acceptable for the fight. Mid-week boxing action can often be rather limited and this week sees the limitations of mid-week boxing coming to the fray once again as we have two Heavyweight bouts. Unfortunately neither of the bouts actually is actually set in stone with no "opponent" yet to be announced.
The two men we know will be in action are the big hitting Charles Martin (13-0-1, 11) and Thanasis Michaloudis (8-0, 7). Martin, who is scheduled to fight in an 8 rounder, was one of the busiest men in boxing last year with a 12 fights, winning 11. It'd be a shock to see anything but another victory for the hard hitting southpaw. For Michaloudis, who has amazingly fought 8 times since August 2013, we'd expect him too to score an easy victory. Born in Greece, though based in the US, Michaloudis was a sensation last year and we're hoping he'll be just as busy this year as he continues to climb up the rankings. |
