Dubbed "The Destroyer" Ruiz showed how he got his moniker as he destroyed the hopes and dreams of Hanks in a very impressive performance. Ruiz pushed the action from the off forcing Hanks on to the back foot where he never looked confident.
The hand speed and sharp jab of Ruiz seemed to upset Hanks who likely expected Ruiz to be slower given his rotund shape. Although clearly looking out of his depth Hanks did manage some success in round 3 landing 2 notable right hands which although landed clean did little to halt the progress of Ruiz. Unfortunately for American fans those right hands were as good as it got for Hanks who would be dropped twice in round 4 with the referee waving off the bout after the second knockdown.
In another notable bout Cuba's former Olympic Gold medal winner Odlanier Solis (20-1, 13) scored his first stoppage in over 3 years stopping Yakup Saglam (29-3, 26) in round 7. This bout was poor from the off with the referee telling both men that "I want a real fight" in the hope of encouraging the action. Certainly one to avoid if you can.
The same card also featured a dominant decision victory for former Cruiserweight Enad Licina (24-4, 13) who did everything but stop Marko Rupcic (2-4).
In the UK Lithuanian Paulius Kasiulevicius (2-0, 2) scored his second stoppage in around 7 weeks taking out Latvian journeyman Janis Ginters (2-4, 2) in the second of a scheduled 4.
South African Olympian Danie Venter (17-6, 12) scored his second victory of the year as he over-came Zimbabwe's Elvis Moyo (3-5-2, 1). We now expect Venter to drop down to Cruiserweight and compete for the Commonwealth title so this may end up being the 34 year old Venter's final bout at Heavyweight.
Unbeaten Russian Apti Davtaev (2-0, 2) scored his second victory of the year as he took out the over matched and under-sized Semen Pakhomov (0-2) inside a round.
In an under-the-radar contest in China the unbeaten Zhang Junlong (4-0, 4) recorded his fourth early victory stopping experienced American Cullen Rogers (10-38-2, 6) in the second of a scheduled 6. We've got to admit we don't know much about Junlong but this was a big step up, even if Rogers has been on a big losing streak in recent years.
